All the paperwork shenanigans are over and it looks like the verdict is in: Burkina Faso. A country I dare say 98.99% of Americans can’t label on a map (truth told, I think the 1.01% are all a little off FOR knowing), UN’s 176th out of 177th poorest country (too depressing) that is home to a friendly, vibrant people (much better!) will be my home for the next two years.

Some Burkina tid bits…..

-Capitol: Ouagadougou

-landlocked West African country with few natural resources

-Mossi account for close to 40% of the country’s population

-About 90% of the population is engaged in the subsistence agriculture of sorghum, maise, peanuts, cotton, rice, and pearl millet

-recent drought as well as unrest in nearby countries such as Cote d’Ivoire and N. Ghana that typically supply the Burkinabe with seasonal work has left the country with an overwhelming unemployment rate of 80%

You’ve got a lot of competition. I must say though, I like your style best. Keep up the irreverence. I’m thinking Bukowski. Anywho, I wish you only the most complete, challenging, and gratifying experience you or I can imagine. Beware the bugs, embrace the peeps, learn the French and the soccer. Much love. Adios, or should I say Au revoir.

Sorry I miss the call from Philadelphia. Somehow the ringer is not working in my phone. I will send it back to Blackberry. I love you and best of luck in your training and please send us e-mails of your experiences. Will see you in six months. Love, Dad

Howdy from Hallettsville! What an adventure! I can’t wait to share with the HHS Rotary Interact students. Please let me know if there are any Rotary Clubs in your area. We are looking for an international service project, and we would like to partner with you and/or a Rotary group in your area. We are currently researching Heifer International and considering something agriculturally related like that. I admire your willingness to learn and serve. I’ll be in touch! Take care!
